Everyone Needs Encouragement

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works”

(Hebrews 10:24)

Saying, “let us“, the apostle issued an exhortation. He sought to persuade his congregation to have a spiritual attitude and display God-honoring actions.

His word “consider” is a compound. The prefix means down, a dominate action and it intensives the main word; which is, mind or to think. Together, they convey the idea of careful consideration, sensitivity in contemplation or thorough thought. The consideration must not end in criticism but encouragement; and, everyone needs encouragement!

The object is “one another“. These are God’s saints, Christ’s redeemed men and women, kindred believers to each other, our companion pilgrims and fellow-laborers in the gospel. Each are of like passions and infirmities.

When he said “to provoke” we discover he wrote with a purpose, which was to stir up or positively stimulate. Figuratively, we might say, it means to sharpen or heat up, since all are given to becoming dull and lukewarm.

The ultimate goal of the stimulation is two-fold:

First, “unto love“. O my, how weak are our natural affections! This is God’s kind of love: selfless, enduring, serving, benevolent, merciful, sacrificial and particular but without partiality.

Secondly, “to good works“. Love without action is empty! These works are not for but because of justification. They aren’t the cause of love but the fruit of love. Good works seek not self-aggrandizement but God’s glory. They adorn the gospel, stop the mouths of unbelievers and manifest the profit of God’s love in us.

Let husbands and wives, parents and children encourage one another. Let the pastor and the people encourage one another. Paul said: “…comfort yourselves together, and edify one another…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Let us be encouraged in faithfulness to the message of salvation exclusively conditioned on Christ and the righteousness He earned, which God imputed in connection with the cross.
