His Familiar Friend Became His Fatal Foe

 

“Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me”

(Psalms 41:9)

 

  David’s counselor, Ahithophel led the revolt of Absalom, David’s son. Here, David spoke of his painful experience. However, there’s a greater truth: as David is a type of Christ, Ahithophel is a type of Judas Iscariot.

Both men are identified as “friend” – David’s expression “own familiar friend” can be translated: “man of peace”. When Jesus was indentified by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane, He said, “Friend, why have you come?” (Matthew 26:50). How generous and gracious was our Lord!

Both men are identified as “trusted” – David said, “whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread”. The David and Ahithopel had often shared a meal. He had won David’s confidence. Likewise, Jesus had shown trust toward Judas, making him the keeper of the treasure (John 12:6).

Both men are identified as “against me” – The metaphor “lifted up his heel” likely refers to an unruly horse that kicks with his hind hooves and tramples with his front. Both men were appointed to their dark role in history but both gave themselves to their devious acts with full submission of mind and heart. Both failed in their dastardly quests and hanged themselves (2 Samuel 17:23; Matthew 27:5).

Jesus spoke of His sovereign election and of this psalm when foretelling His betrayal: “I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me” (John 13:18). “Fulfilled” appears more than eighty times in the New Testament with most of them referring to the fulfillment of scripture prophecy. It’s not chance but Sovereignty who fulfills scripture!
