Prayer After This Manner
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name…”
(Matthew 6:9)
What is often called “The Lord’s Prayer” should probably be called “the disciple’s prayer” or “the model prayer”. The entire prayer goes through verse 13. The words above reveal the Lord’s instructions regarding the saints’ “manner” of prayer.
Our Father – He is the Father of His people by creation, adoption, covenant relationship with Christ, redemption and spiritual awakening. Only legitimate sons have the right to call Him Father (Galatians 4:6). He is Father only of the elect (John 1:12-13; 8:44). His love is directed to His spiritual children: “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” (1 John 3:1).
Which art in heaven – He sees and rules from heaven. He is the high and lofty One. We are from dust, are dust and will return to dust. The address speaks of His eternality and immutability, His omniscience and omnipotence. In prayer, our hearts are raised to heaven. Our approach is not to an earthly being, but toward the Father, majestic in heaven.
Hallowed be thy name – Holy is the meaning of “hallowed”. God is wholly other than man. God is so holy, He wouldn’t accept the best offering of Cain and Moses had to remove His shoes before the burning bush. By “name” is meant all God is, His nature and attributes. His elect are called by His name, to His name and for His name. His holiness is His glory
In behalf of God’s elect, the holy character of God required righteousness at Christ’s hand. Only that righteousness was suited for imputation and justification. Even the infinitely holy God could require no more. To Him we pray!
