What is the “unction of the Holy One”?

 

“But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things”

(1 John 2:20)

 

  The masses cry for a gospel devoid of truth. The apostle faced a similar crowd at the first century’s end. Consider:    

 

Contrast: John contrasted God’s people with those in the two previous verses, beginning with “But”.

Verse 18 – He spoke of “antichrists”. This is doctrine opposing the truth. It’s a spirit of ignorance and rebellion embodied in people. Many are family, friends and some at one-time joined in worship.

Verse 19 – He spoke of them saying, “they went from us, but they were not of us…” They were never one with us. We extend the right hand of fellowship, still they go out.

 

Calling: He spoke of “unction” and “anointing” (V20, 27), referring to the work of the Holy Spirit, whom John respectfully called “the Holy One”. Both are the same Greek word meaning to enable God’s elect to embrace the truth. Paul prayed for God’s chosen seed, saying: “…give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling…” (Ephesians 1:17-18).

 

Content: The gospel isn’t mystical or mixed with rituals, works or idolatry. By the gospel preached and the Holy Spirit who “teaches all things”; believers “know all things” (V20, 27). That is “all things” essential to understanding and obeying Christ by His gospel. Unbelievers cry: strip away the details, take out the particulars and eliminate doctrine that divides. Paul said the particular content of which men were ignorant is “the righteousness of God” (Romans 10:3). This “righteousness”, God imputed to His people when Christ completed His obedience unto death (Romans 5:12-19).
