Jesus: “I will come to you”
“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you”
(John 14:18)
Gravity held a strangle-hold on the moment. The Passover Supper had passed and passed away. The Lord’s Supper had been instituted. Judas Iscariot had departed to consummate his betrayal. Within the hour, Jesus entered into His high-priestly prayer (John 17:1), then into the Garden of Gethsemane for His hour of “agony” (Luke 22:44). The Jew’s religious leaders, along with Roman soldiers, came to arrest Him. They illegally bound Him and led Him away for trial and crucifixion. Jesus knew His separation would be a weight too great for His disciples.
“I will not leave you comfortless” – The literal translation of “comfortless” is orphan. In the prospect of looming death, we cannot make such a pledge to our children. Orphaned and isolated with the world’s weight on their neck was their feeling. He promised, “you will not be orphaned”. How could He do that?
“I will come to you”. He came to them in resurrection; and, He will come again at the consummation of this age. However, these are not what He intended. He meant He would come in the Person and Power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “…when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself…He shall glorify me…” (John 16:13-14). Prior to His ascension, Jesus said, “…you shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). His prophecy came to pass on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1f); and the Holy Spirit came to abide until Christ returns. “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). God’s people aren’t fatherless; no, they have a heavenly guardian in the glorious Holy Spirit.
