Saved by “a root out of a dry ground”
“For he shall grow up…as a root out of a dry ground”
(Isaiah 53:2)
The “dry ground” is spiritually-dead Israel and the nearly-defunct house of David. The “root” is Christ. A flower, shrub and tree have beauty but not a root! Christ is:
An singular root – “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22)
Millions of facts compose human history. None is as singular as this: God condemned in the first Adam and justified in the Last Adam. Christ is the root for chosen Jews and Gentiles, Abraham, Moses, David and the prophets, the eleven disciples, Paul, Timothy and faithful women like Lydia and Phoebe. Christ remains the singular “root” by which God’s elect stand justified.
An unseen root – “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory” (1 Peter 1:8)
As we cannot see the root of a great Oak Tree but enjoy its shade, so we cannot see Christ but find delight in His saving benefits. He was seen by Peter and a few others for about three years. We are like those to whom Peter preached: we cannot see Christ but we “love” Him and find ourselves “believing” His gospel.
A saving root – “if the root be holy, so are the branches” (Romans 11:16)
Sinners need a sinless Savior. Paul didn’t question Christ’s character or conduct but declared: since He is holy. A gospel promise followed: “so are the branches”. In connection with Christ, by election and blood-bought imputed-righteousness, God declared His chosen ones “holy” or sanctified. As a natural root produces branches and foliage, this spiritual “root” produces repentant believers. In Him, we rest!
